Tourist Attractions in Larkana

This city is situated at the place where the Kalhoras first established themselves, and begun to dig canals for irrigated agriculture. The town’s location is commercially significant, lying on the route from Karachi to Shikarpur and Bolan Pass, and under the British it became Sind’s greatest grain mart. The town is noted today as the home town of the late Benazir Bhutto.

The only antiquity in Larkana is the dilapidated remains of a fort that has been used in turn as arsenal, a jail, a hospital, store room for Camel Corps and a lunatic asylum. Larkana is a good base from which to visit Moenjo Daro.

 

Larkana, city (1998 pop. 270,366), S central Pakistan, on the Ghar canal. Famous for the quality of its rice, it is an important grain market and a trading center for silk and cotton goods. Brass and other metalware are manufactured. The city has two colleges affiliated with the Univ. of Sind. Larkana, named for the Larak tribe that inhabited the neighboring area, is the birthplace of former Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Remains of the ancient city of Mohenjo-Daro have been uncovered c.15 mi (24 km) S of Larkana.
