Tourist Attractions in Kalam
Kalam is the last valley of Swat, located 99 kilometres from Mingora (capital of Swat) in the northern upper section, along the banks of the Swat River in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. The Swat River was formed as a result of the confluence of two major tributaries, the Gabral and Ushu River.
At an elevation of about 2,000 m above sea level – the valley itself provides a plateau that is located above the river and is used for farming. There are a number of visible mountains, also visible from Matiltan, a valley close to Kalam Valley, including Mount Falak Sar at 5,918 meters and another unnamed peak at 6,096 meters high Ushu and Mahodand. A brigde crosses to the east bank of the Swat River at the north end of the town. Shortly afterwards the road forks; left to Utrot and Gabrail
And right to the Ushu and Mahudand valley. Following the right fork, the road goes through the thick pine forest and climbs up the Ushu Valley to Ushu Village. Beyond the village a Jeep road (4×4 drive), after 35 kms drive take you to Mahudand Lake (Lake of fishes).

Utrot and Gabrail
After crossing the river to the north of Kalam, the road follows the Utrot river for 16 kms to Utrot village. The road is metaled for first nine kilometers and then it becomes a rough road. There are numerous picnic resorts but there is no such facility for lodging and boarding except a Govt Forest rest house (for residence permit is required from the forest department).

Desan Valley
The valley which climbs up from behind the Walnut Heights Hotel above Kalam, through meadows, pine forests is also very beautiful. There is no Jeep track here but one can explore the valley by hiking.
